Kevyn Aucoin Volume Mascara

Where I got it: I have been a big fan of tubing mascaras as I have oily eyelids and I always have problems with mascara running under my eyes – even waterproof ones. So far, Blinc is the only mascara that does not crumble, melt, run or smudge from my eyes at all. A comparable one is by Majolica Majorca which is a Japanese drugstore brand that is not easy to get in New Zealand.

Anyways, I saw raving reviews (Instagram, YouTube, blogs, etc.) about this tubing mascara by Kevyn Aucoin and I am so glad that this is available on the Mecca Beauty (NZ) website. This set me back $44 for 5g of product, but when a L’Oreal mascara can be over $30 in NZ, $44 for a brand like Kevyn Aucoin or Hourglass (review of their Caution mascara here) is nothing!

What I got: This is the Volume Mascara by Kevyn Aucoin. With advanced technology from Japan, this groundbreaking mascara uses lash-building fibres to thicken, separate and lengthen your lashes. Its invincible staying power means lashes will stay put all day without smudging, melting or flaking and the tubing formula allows for quick and easy removal at the end of the day. The thin brush is designed for precise application beginning from deep within the lash base and applies a liberal coat of mascara to each lash without clumping for the ultimate in defined and volumised lashes.

How I find it: From the similar collection, Kevyn Aucoin also has another mascara called The Curling Mascara which has a lengthening, tubing formula. I chose the Volume Mascara because I wanted more volume for my lashes that does not melt off. I always work on my eyes after my face makeup is complete and before the final makeup setting spray. I curl my lashes first, then apply eyeshadow and liquid eyeliner (I don’t do eye makeup and eyeliner on a daily basis). Then I apply 2 layers of the Volume Mascara along my upper lashes from root to tip. No fancy technique required, I just avoid getting too close to the lashline.

Overall: Initial thoughts – I really love the slimline wand and brush. It makes getting to my lashes a lot easier and less mess. The formula though is quite wet – which tends to make my lashes stick together (similar to what Blinc does on my lashes). This can easily be dealt with by a q-tip or a silicone mascara brush. It has a thickening effect but I actually see more of a lengthening effect instead. You can build it up over 2 layers without clumping or looking spidery so that is a big pro.

As for the longevity and “tubing” side of things.. I usually use a cleansing oil all over my face except for my lashes (I feel that using oil to remove the tubing mascara, it kind of melts it and make a bit of a mess), wash that off and while I do that I wet my lashes with warm water. Then I will double cleanse with my usual cleanser. After a bit of massaging, I rinse my face with water and while I was working on cleaning my face, the mascara would have loosened up and the tubes will be removed easily with a gentle swipe with my fingers.

All in all, really like this mascara so far. I love how it doesn’t clump at all but build volume and it is truely a tubing mascara that removes with warm water. It is pricey though, at $44 for 5g of product. I will certainly be reaching for this before it reaches the expiry date (3 months after opening)!
