Where I got it
It was Farmers Beauty week and this year I picked up a tonne of products mainly from Chanel and Dior because you hardly get any discounts or double point offers from them at Farmers. I wasn’t really looking for powder foundations in particular, but I wanted to try more complexion products from the brand. I currently use the Forever Liquid Foundation and their Backstage Face & Body, and I really enjoy them. While I was there, I looked at presses powders (approx $90+), but the sales lady also told me about their compact powder foundations that have medium coverage and can also be used as a blotted powder on-the-go. This one here is $118.
What I got
This is the Dior Diorskin Forever Perfect Matte Powder Makeup SPF20 PA+++ in shade 030 Medium Beige. Dior creates Perfect Makeup Extreme Control: an extra-matte complexion that stays vibrant and shine-free from morning until night, even in the most extreme conditions. Diorskin Forever Extreme Control powder makeup contains Smart Blotting Powders, a mesh of incredibly fine mattifying mineral powder, for a formula that blend seamlessly with the skin and delivers matte correction with lightweight, pampering comfort. Day after day, the Poreless Effect skincare essence targets pores to help refine skin texture.
How I find it
First of all, it comes in a cardboard box packaging and its own dee blue velvet pouch with the CD logo. The deep blue plastic compact looks a little dated, Dior makes their pressed setting powders in more updated, chic packaging. It has a magnetic closure and it comes with a puff for application. There is only 9g of product in each compact and they are refillable.
From the name of this product and all of the benefits and words on this packaging, you can kind of tell it’s more catered towards combination/oily skin types. The words mattifying, pore-refining and extreme wear all sounds amazing for combination to oily skin types. But I never knew a powder foundation can achieve so much, but let’s find out!
So for the first time I used this, I went without a primer, just moisturised skin with sunscreen as well. I waited for the sunscreen to settle down, then I used the sponge puff provided to apply the powder. I felt so clueless on applying a powder foundation honestly, but I just pat the sponge onto the product, maybe a little wiping motion as well, and then I pat it onto my skin instead of gliding it on. I started with my cheek area, then working it up around my eye area and to my forehead. I pick up more product when I see fit and then started going to my jawline, chin and neck area. I can already see a nice, even sheer coverage with the first thin layer.
Once I covered my entire face with the first layer of foundation, I pay a little more attention to my cheeks and nose area for a little bit more coverage. I keep the patting motion all through the face and I am loving the look. It is mattifying, but not drying at all. Currently, I don’t have any dry patches or dryness problems around my face so I don’t have to worry about catching into flaky skin, but I don’t need to use any setting powder over this and my skin looks really beautiful – mattified, but not dead flat.
The second time I used it, I applied an illuminating primer (CT Flawless Filter) over my sunscreen and applie the powder foundation as I did previously. It didn’t really make a difference to the mattifying effect, my skin still looked petal matte and smooth. It also did not affect the longevity, I still see my natural oils come through by around 4th hour, but my skin still looked great, the oil and foundation seemed to have mixed well without separating and going patchy. This happened without a primer as well and they both looked the same within the same timeframe.
I didn’t feel like using a setting powder over it would do anything amazing, it might even make my skin even drier and might look cakey, so I didn’t even try. This compact can be used to touch-up during the day so I did give that a go by the time I see oils coming through. I simply blot my face with facial blotting sheets or tissue paper – just blot, no wiping, and then reapply the foundation with patting motion only.
Overall
So far, I have been using this powder foundation for a week and I am enjoying it. We are going into winter time here in New Zealand so my skin will eventually get drier and might need something a little more hydrating. I will see how a moisturised base will last me with this mattifying foundation, but at the moment I am loving that natural matte finish that is not heavy and not cakey. It’s thin and light, it’s not bunching around my pores or getting into my fine lines.
When my natural oils come through, it comes through softly, not super slick. It mixes in with the foundation and seems to turn it into a sightly dewy foundation. Bearing in mind, all of this happens in around 4 hours and you can always boot away the oil and reapply on-the-go.
Just one more random thing I want to point out, I managed to use the sponge for application for 2 days before I washed it, and it washed clean in one go! It looked exactly like new and I was so impressed! I do like to add a tip with using a compact powder foundation is to use it on skin that has no visible oil, otherwise you might ruin the compact by adding a film on top and it will somehow harden the powder.
