Lime Crime Velvetines

Where I got it: These are my first Lime Crime products and I bought them for NZD$82.00 from makeup.co.nz. They offer free shipping for purchases over NZD $75 and they ship within 24hrs (I ordered on Saturday, order got through on Monday and delivered on Tuesday!). These are NZD $30.00 each if you buy them separately. They have been raved on and on over Youtube and and beauty blogger websites so I had to grab some even though I usually don’t spend that much money on lip products.

What I got: This is a set of 3 Lime Crime Velvetines – Suedeberry – a lovely matte coral red, Pink Velvet – a perfect matte pink and Red Velvet – a rich velvety red. Velvetines are liquid to matte lip stains that provides super pigmented lip colour and superior staying power with a matte finish. They go on like liquid and dries down to a weightless matte finish that is transfer-proof, kiss-proof, long-wearing and utterly addictive!

How I find it: I was really excited to try them when I opened the package, but I was reluctant to swatch them on my lips because all the colours are super pigmented and too vibrant to be wearing at home in my PJs watching TV at the end of the night (hubby will be looking at me as if I’ve crazy). That’s why I swatched it on my wrist first. As I pulled the applicator out, the formula feels very watery but the pigment is just so full on it, the entire swipe on my wrist had no streaks at all. It did take a bit of time to try because one dip into the formula is enough for the entire lips, but the swatch on my wrist is much less area than my lips. So after a few minutes the the lip stain has completely dried, I tried to wipe it with a tissue and it will not budge! The staying power is amazing and the vibrancy of the colour is stunning even when it is matte! Impressive.

I then went onto remove the lip stain with a bit of cleansing oil… I massaged the cleansing oil with my fingertips and see how the pigment stains my whole wrist bright red. The bottom left picture is after the first rinse, then the bottom right is the second rinse. You can still see a bit of stain left. I am glad that I could remove it with my cleansing oil without too much rubbing because at the end of the day, I like all my makeup off, including my lip colour. If this is difficult to remove, I would be thinking twice before putting it on!

So here are some swatches on my lips the next morning (right after application, the lip stain is still wet, once dried it is totally matte). I had to scrub my lips before I apply these lip stains because they are a matte finish and they will catch onto creases and dry flaky skin. If you can go without a lip balm beforehand that would make the lip stain last longer and the stain will adhere to your lips directly without a slippery layer underneath.  I would also recommend that you do it with a mirror so that you make no mistakes and a cotton bud just in case you do make mistakes and fix it up while the stain is still wet! I have heard that you can apply a gloss over once it has dried, but I do believe that it will reduce the wear of the lip stain.

I do check on my lips during the day to spot any cracking or flaking or cracking. After 3 hours of wear, the lip stain is still looking vibrant, but my lips do look a little on the dry side if I smile, the lines are a bit obvious. So far, no lip-liner effect and no reapplication required. After about 6 hours, my lips are feeling dry the lip stain looks a bit cracked and fading when you get a closer look. I had lunch and the stain comes off with the tissue. The lip stain ‘chips’ off near the inner part of my lips which made it look kind of weird. After about 8 hours, I had to wipe it off.

Overall: I love the liquid to matte formula, the pigmentation and the vibrancy of these lip stains. The staying power is great and by far better than most long-wearing lipsticks even though it does flake. The colours are really pigmented and bright so I wouldn’t really wear them to work, I would most likely wear them when I go out. Definitely worth the money and I would love to try the new shade in Wicked!

Have you tried any of these Lime Crime Velvetines? Which is your favourite colour?
