Media and a couple of bloggers were invited to Dermalogica’s latest launch – UltraCalming Redness Relief Primer SPF20 at Auckland’s MASU restaurant. MASU has won numerous Metro Magazine awards in 2014 including Restaurant of the Year Supreme Winner, Best New Restaurant, Best Smart Dining, Best Drinks List Finalist, and few more to list!
The location was trendy and the vibe was amazing! We were treated to an icy cold aloe vera, mint and green grape mocktail to start with to evoke calm and wellness after a hard day at work! About 18 of us were seated in the Obi room and were served a small glass of raspberry shochu tonic.
Shortly followed by 2 light entres abokado salad (avocado, coriander, sorrel, carrot, daikon salad with lime and green chili) and yasai uramaki (avocado, asparagus, ginger, cucumber and carrot rolled in seaweed).
Caroline Parker, the Head of Education for Dermalogica New Zealand gave a presentation on the causes of skin sensitivity and irritation and what causes redness. This is where Dermalogica’s new UltraCalming Redness Relief Primer SPF20 comes in to help. With the UltraCalming™ Complex, this little green primer contains no rtificial fragrances, colors or parabens and it is cruelty free! Interesting fact: this colour and the look of the texture of this primer look exactly like Wasabi! How appropriate for a Japanese themed dinner!
What I got: This is a 22ml tube of UltraCalming Redness Relief Primer SPF20. This new formula calms irritation, protects skin from UVA/UVB exposure which can further aggravate sensitisation, produces a smooth, translucent, red-neutralising finish for an even skin tone, and primes the skin surface for a more flawless makeup application and longer makeup wear. Redness Relief Primer SPF20 addresses redness in both the short and long-term. Natural botanical extracts provide the sheer green tint to camouflage the redness, which often accompanies irritated skin. A silicone base provides a matte, velvety feel that protects the integrity of the skin’s essential lipid barrier from further aggravation. Comprised of ceramides, fatty acids and cholesterol, the lipid barrier not only maintains the water balance in the skin by inhibiting trans epidermal water loss, but also protects against environmental stimuli including microbes, chemicals and physical factors, which may evoke a cutaneous response. The product’s SPF20 provides powerful daily defense against sun exposure to prevent further skin inflammation and sensitivity.
“The newest understanding of chronic skin redness concludes that skin sensitivity and inflammation is caused by the combination of genetic susceptibility, immune disruption, nerve activity and epidermal barrier function,” says Caroline Parker, Head of Education for Dermalogica New Zealand. “There are two primary contributors to common skin redness, immunogenic inflammation is where the immune system launches a cascade of inflammation and involves the activation of white blood cells, and neurogenic inflammation is triggered by the nervous system. In both cases, the person experiences pain, redness, itching, swelling and heat associated with inflammation.”
How I find it: This little tube of primer feels soooo smooth on the skin from the silicon ingredient. It has a really nice green shade which does not mask out your skin, nor is it pastel like a concealor. This primer doesn’t magically make redness disappear, but it makes it less.. angry. I don’t have too much redness on my face, but once in a while I have redness from sensitivity from a new product and redness from my breakouts. I use this mainly on my cheeks and on the side of my nose. It blends in nicely to correct the redness, then I use a light dab of concealor on stubborn redness then I’m ready to go! I also found that this primer is really good for my combination skin and my foundation sits on this very very well! Loving this little tube, I’m not going to give it away!
UltraCalming Redness Relief Primer SPF20 is available from authorised skin centres and dermalogica.co.nz from 1st April 2015 for RRP$88.00.
