Where I got it: I got this from my local Life Pharmacy for $27.99 while they were having a “Buy 2 get 3rd free” offer. They should be available from Farmers, Kmart, leading pharmacies, etc.
What I got: These are the Maybelline Tattoo Brow Gel Tint in Dark Brown and Medium Brown. First peel-off brow gel that leaves a natural-looking tint onto your brows without smearing and fading, enriched with the extracts of collagen, hyaluronic acid, natural aloe vera, royal jelly, caffeine extract for added moisture. This comes in a soft gel form that dries up and turns into a soft peel-off gel without skin irritation.
How I find it: I like to use this at night time, so I remove any makeup and oil from my brows then I trim and tidy my brow hairs. Then without wiping off any product from the brush, paint the gel tint directly onto the brows covering the hair and the skin underneath it. I use a q-tip to tidy up mistakes and perfect the brow shape. I leave it on for 20 minutes for the brow tint to last for around 3 days or leave it on for 3 hours to last around a week. After the desired time is up, peel the gel off from the end. It will not pull any hair off and you can easily peel the entire thing off in one go. I like to use a spoolie to make sure all the gel is peeled off. Then you are all set to go!
Dark brown and medium brown looks pretty much the same when applied. However, from the demo pictures below, the stain that the dark brown shade leaves looks a little green tinted compared to the medium brown. I researched for a bit and noticed that Maybelline has launched a dark grey shade in Asia countries that were not launched in New Zealand (sad). I would have bought a grey shade if it was available.
Overall: This stuff is great! The staying power is amazing and is extremely easy to use. I tried to remove it with my favourite Clinique Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm, but it just did not budge, so that passed the oil test. I also rubbed it with tissue paper and nothing came off. Of course, the tattoo would last longer if you avoid using oil-base makeup remover on it, but you should be ok to use a normal water-based cleanser over the area without removing much. I have previously use the Wunderbrow which is also a semi-permanent brow product which applies on and let dry. However, it comes off easily when I wash my face or rub my brows.
I have used this a few times now and I have left it between 20 minutes and up to 3 hours for the full effect. I found that when I leave it on longer, the stain or ‘tattoo’ effect is much darker and long-lasting. I also noticed that when I go by my usual double cleansing with a cleansing oil and a water-based cleanser at night and a cleansing milk at day, the ‘tattoo’ fades to a reddish brown colour which looks quite different to how it looked on day 1 and very different to my natural brow colour.
