Where I got it
After trying my first Tatcha product – The Silk Canvas, I fell in love. The Silk Canvas is a gorgeous and one of a kind makeup primer. I started noticing the brand more and they recently launched this eye treatment/illuminating product. The only place in New Zealand that stocks Tatcha products are Mecca Maxima/ Cosmetica, so I got mine there for $78. Not the most affordable product but if you think of it as a skincare+makeup product, it is actually pretty good value. Comes in 3 colours, Moonlight, Softlight and Candlelight.
What I got
This is the Tatcha The Pearl. in Softlight. From the tatcha.com website: A tinted treatment that awakens eyes with a pearl-like luster, hydrates and reduces the look of dark circles and wrinkles — instantly and over time.
This 2-in-1 makeup and treatment formula breaks upon application to deliver both refreshing moisture and natural coverage for a healthy, well-rested look all day.
- Awakens: Light-refracting pearl pigments work with Akoya Pearl extract in an active skincare treatment formula to restore radiance by helping to address the 3 causes of under eye darkness thinning skin, blue undertones and pigmentation. The Pearl works to address dark circles and fine lines and wrinkles by supporting natural collagen production and inhibiting hyperpigmentation, boosted by niacinamide, known to visibly brighten and firm.
- Smooths and Protects: Silk powder smooths the look of fine lines and imperfections, while a blend of botanical extracts protects from makeup and pollution that can cause signs of ageing.
- Anti-Aging Hydration: Lightweight cream powered by Hadasei-3™, a proprietary trio of Japanese anti-aging superfoods, and hyaluronic acid nourishes and hydrates for a plump, refreshed appearance.
How I find it
This is a very interesting product. First of all, I have researched a little bit about his product before I bought it. It is a skincare product, like a tinted moisturiser for the eye area, but to be used in the morning instead of the night.
However, when I actually got around trying it on the back of my hand and trying it on my eye area, I got a bit of concern. The treatment cream appears to have a dual-phase formula which seems to separate on contact with the skin. I was a little shocked, so I went online to find out more.
I went to the Tatcha YouTube account and Vicky actually explained about the formula behind The Pearl. It has the base of their Water Cream so it has a sort of a water-burst technology where when in contact with the skin by rubbing, the water and pigment phase separates. So the correct way to use this is to dab around the under eye area, gently blend the cream into the skin with fingertips and then tap the pigments into the skin to further blend it in.
I tried it again on my eye area and indeed the two formula did separate, but just don’t freak out and keep blending until the pigments are blended into the skin.
I would use this as part of my skincare before foundation and certainly, this does not replace concealer, but if this light colour-correcting product is enough, then you can always go without concealer.
Overall
The eye treatment instantly brightens the area under the eyes if you blend it in correctly and selected the right shade of course. It only comes in 3 shades because it is only a tinted moisturiser for the eye area, it’s not a concealer, it doesn’t need to match every skin tone. It is moisturising but not thick and greasy. It preps the eye area with hydration so that any foundation or concealer goes on smoothly.
When I am wearing less makeup, like a BB cream or a sheer coverage foundation, I would use this under foundation and that’s it. If I am going for fuller coverage, I would use this as an eye base, apply foundation then concealer over it. That would ensure my concealer stay in place because the area is well hydrated.
