Where I got it
I got the Face Studio Protecting Primer for $12.24 at The Chemist Warehouse and the Master Prime Hydrating Primer a few months ago for similar price. They are both available at The Chemist Warehouse at the same price at the moment. Sometimes they do extra discounts on all Maybelline products, if you are not in a hurry, pick it up when its on extra discount.
What I got
This is a 30ml tube of the Maybelline Face Studio Prime Protecting Primer. Within the same primer range, they have the hydrating one, the blurring one and a illuminating one as well. I picked the protecting one this time because it had SPF. The hydrating one was picked up a while ago and I had no idea they changed the name of it slightly.
So these are the information I got from the Maybelline website about these products.
How I find it
Protecting Primer SPF30. The protecting primer has SPF 30 so that is great because I wear a sunscreen every single day and I never rely on a foundation’s SPF as my main sun protection. I always put on a sunscreen, then primer then foundation which can be a lot of layers depending on what type of product I’m using. Therefore I love a lightweight sunscreen and pair it with either a hydrating primer or a blurring and mattifying primer.
This primer is hydrating but does not control oil, so by around the 4th hour mark, my face is oily again in the T-zone area. The UV filters in this sunscreen is chemical so if you are weary or have an allergic reaction or sensitivity, please read ingredients list.
Hydrating Primer. The hydrating primer has a lotion-like consistency without that silicone, slippery feeling. It contains hyaluronic acid to bring moisture to the skin, but I would suggest if you have really dry skin, to really apply a good moisturiser before makeup. When I’m using a primer that does not contain SPF, I always apply sunscreen first. I would use a thinner formula because I know I will be adding layers of product over it (primer and foundation) and I don’t want to look cakey. I like how I can use more of this primer where I need to and not overload my face. It’s not thick and does settle into the skin, not just stay on the surface and feel tacky. My makeup looks fresh and flawless immediately after applying and no dry patches in sight.
Overall
I like both of these primers and I like how I can use both of them at the same time. The hydrating primer is more of a moisturiser and the protecting primer is more of a hydrating lotion with SPF. In my honest opinion, I would use them as moisturisers than makeup primers. I would expect my makeup primers to fill in my pores or blur them, or be oil-controlling so my makeup lasts longer. Otherwise an illuminating one to give some glow before foundation. Neither of these have that function and whilst this does prolong the wear of my foundation or makeup, a good moisturiser could do that same thing anyway.
So it is pretty much up to you if you would like to use such a product. I would go for the Protecting Primer because it contains SPF which is one less product (sunscreen) to worry about.
