Neutrogena Bright Boost serum and gel-cream

Where I got it

I got this from my local Pak n Save supermarket and they were new products. There is a total of 3 new products in this line available at Pak n Save at that time and it was a serum, a gel cream, and a polishing scrub. The serum is $27.99 and the gel cream is $23.99, I did not check the price of the scrub. I did not get the scrub because I hardly use a scrub and even if I do, I make sure it is a high-quality scrub that I know the granules won’t be too harsh on my skin. I have yet to see these anywhere else (countdown, new world, chemist warehouse).

How I find it

Bright Boost Illuminating Serum (30ml).  Ignite your radiance with this resurfacing serum formulated with naturally derived Turmeric extract and our highest concentration of brightening amino sugar. Help reduce visible imperfections and illuminates skin improved tone, texture, and clarity. Suitable for all skin tones.

Ingredients: Water, Glycerin, Dimethicone, Acetyl Glucosamine, Propylene Glycol, Dimethiconol, Phenoxyethanol, Carbomer, Tetrahydrodiferuloylmethane, Hexylresorcinol, Disodium EDTA, Sodium Hydroxide, Dimethicone/Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Pentylene Glycol, Fragrance, Amodimethicone, Ethylhexylglycerin, Silica, Mica, Titanium Dioxide.

Bright Boost Illuminating Serum

This serum has a milky look with micro-shimmers. It smells really nice and it appears to have some small granules suspended inside that melts when you rub it in. I’m not sure what it is, but it doesn’t affect the formula or the overall product. It is a rather slippery serum that feels hydrating and nice on the skin. It’s absorbed relatively quickly with a tiny bit of silkiness on top. It contains some skin-brightening ingredients such as Acetyl Glucosamine, Tetrahydrodiferuloylmethane and Hexylresorcinol. This serum is quite hydrating on the skin so I usually don’t need an extra hydrating serum, just a moisturiser on top will suffice.

Bright Boost Gel Cream (50ml). The multitasking gel cream is powered by brightening Amino Sugar, proven to complement skin cell renewal for skin that’s luminous, smooth, and instantly brighter. Suitable for all skin tones.

Ingredients: Water, Dimethicone, Glycerin, Mandelic Acid, Triethyl Citrate, Gluconolactone, Acetyl Glucosamine, Hydroxyethyl Acrylate/Sodium Acryloyldimethyl Taurate Copolymer, Polyacrylate Crosspolymer-6, Butylene Glycol, Squalane, Aluminum Starch Octenylsuccinate, Sodium Hydroxide, Phenoxyethanol, Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Cetearyl Olivate, Dimethiconol, Sorbitan Olivate, Chlorphenesin, Cetearyl Alcohol, Polysorbate 60, Succinoglycan, Coco-Glucoside, Disodium EDTA, Fragrance, Ethylhexylglycerin, Silica, Tin Oxide, Titanium Dioxide, Mica, Red 40.

Bright Boost Gel Cream

The gel cream has the same scent as the serum and this cream straight up has a slight pink tint and the same micro-shimmers. It feels soothing and cooling on the skin and it hydrates and moisturises very well. However this cream does leave a sort of a film on the skin, not so much to the touch, but when you come to wash your face after a few hours or in the morning. This cream provides more of an exfoliating action for brightening the skin from Mandelic Acid and Gluconolactone. This also contains Silica, Tin Oxide, Titanium Dioxide, Mica for that optical brightening effect. Mandelic acid is an AHA that is really gentle on the skin, hence you are able to use this daily or even twice daily as well as on top of exfoliating liquids or serums.

Overall

I did a quick online search and it looks like elsewhere in the world, this Bright Boost Range also has sunscreen, but I either did not see it available or it is not launched here in New Zealand. I still haven’t seen this is Chemist Warehouse yet, but it’s only a matter of time I guess.

In my overall opinion, I prefer the serum over the cream. In saying that, the dropper dispenser was a bit of a dud. It didn’t pick up the serum properly maybe because it was a bit thick. I wish it was a pump bottle instead. I couldn’t see long term brightening results with this product but I do see an immediate brightening effect on the skin. It looks hydrated and luminous. The cream is more hydrating and moisturising than the serum of course, but it doesn’t give that immediate brightening effect. I am also a little weary about the product leaving a film on the skin.
