Where I got it
About a month ago, after my first review of the Foreo UFO Smart Mask Treatment Device, Foreo reached out to me for a collaboration (#sponsoredpost) to try out and review the Foreo BEAR and BEAR mini on my blog. As you may have seen already, I bought the Foreo UFO device earlier this year and I have recently published a review of it (link here). So these devices are a gift, but as always, my reviews are my honest thoughts on my personal experience. They also sent a couple of other devices, but I will review those separately.
The BEAR and BEAR mini devices are available from a lot of retailers – from Foreo directly, Mecca Beauty, AdoreBeauty, Revolve, and CultBeauty. The above online retailer ship to New Zealand. They are a pricey at-home treatment device which is around $445 for the BEAR and $336 for the BEAR mini (prices are taken from Meccabeauty.co.nz).
What I got
I was sent both the Foreo BEAR and BEAR mini to try out and I will focus on the Bear in this post and I will do a comparison between the two in this post.
Foreo is a Swedish brand, but they are selling all over the world and have been really innovative with their skincare devices. I’m sure you all have heard of the Luna cleansing device, the UFO smart mask treatment device and they also have funky eye massagers and toothbrushes which I hear less often. Recently, they have launched a new microcurrent facial toning device called Bear and a little mini version as well (UFO and Luna both have mini versions too).
BEAR can be used as part of your daily morning and evening skincare routine. Choose from a variety of app-guided facial fitness workouts that use 5 adjustable intensities of microcurrent to recharge skin and help diminish visible signs of aging. During microcurrent workouts, gentle T-Sonic™ pulsations massage the face, boosting skin’s radiance and enhancing the absorption of SERUM SERUM SERUM before your workout, and your favourite skincare products afterwards. With BEAR™’s Anti-Shock System™, a unique integrated system that uses ultra-smart sensors to scan and measure your skin’s resistance to electricity at a rate of 100x per second, the microcurrent intensity is automatically adjusted in just 0.002 seconds (quicker than you can even think of blinking!) to best suit your skin. Anti-Shock System™ eliminates any chance of the microcurrent shocking your skin, resulting in maximum safety and effectiveness for an unwavering quality of treatment every single time.
The device comes in a clear plastic box along with a 2ml sample sachet of their Serum Serum Serum, a little travel pouch, a plastic device holder, a short USB port charging cable, and a little booklet. The device is generally a silicone component with two microcurrent spheres at the top, positioned to comfortably fit around the contours of the face. The front has the Foreo logo and nothing else really. The back, however, has the universal power button and Bluetooth indicator light. There is a charging port on the side. The device is 64x79x39mm and 90g, so it is not a very heavy device, it is easy to grip and fits perfectly in my hands.
It has 5 intensity indicator lights to indicate the microcurrent intensity setting of the device. You press it once to turn it on, press again for increased intensity level. A quick double-press will turn the T-sonic on and off. Long-press 3 seconds to turn off the device.
How I find it
Once I have taken the device out of the box, I charge the device until the light no longer blinks. Once fully charged, the device can be used for up to 90 uses (based on 1-minute treatments). I then registered my device on the app. I already have the app downloaded onto my phone because I have the UFO device already. The register and set-up were straightforward and easy. Once the device is registered onto the app, you can either start treatment right away or you can just close the app.
Before we head onto how to operate the device (it’s really easy actually), let’s talk about how the button work. Press the universal button once to turn the device on, quick press for increased intensity level and long-press 3 seconds to turn the device off. Now that we got that clear, let’s start.
There are two ways to use the device: WITH THE APP and WITHOUT THE APP.
WITH THE APP: Using the device with the app will allow you to adjust the settings before starting, and there will be instructions for you to follow on the app on how to glide the device. When I’m ready to use it, I first cleanse my face and pat dry. I have the Serum Serum Serum ready, I open up the app on my phone and make sure Bluetooth is on so I can pair it with the device. Select the registered device and press start. It will ask you to customise whether you want t-sonic pulsations or not and ask the microcurrent intensity level (5-25), then start the treatment. The app with giving you about 20 seconds to apply the serum and the device will startup.
WITHOUT THE APP: Using the device without the app is quick and easy once I get the hang of the technique. I just apply the serum, pick up the device, and press the universal button once and the device will startup. Press again to control the microcurrent intensity (5 lights at 5 increments). Double press to turn the T-sonic on and off. There won’t be any sound or beeps from the device to change location so I need to count how many times I run the device on each area of my face. When it is finished, the device turns itself off and I just clean the device.
Overall
I have been using the device for about 2 weeks ever since I got it. I used it every day for 15 days and whilst I did not really see significant lifting and firming results, I did experience a reduction in puffiness on my face from the massaging action and T-sonic pulsations. I personally do not have major sagging concerns in my mid-30s, but I do have a bit of a double chin which is hereditary, but I can tell that if I don’t do anything about it now, I will get turkey neck when I’m in my 50s. Therefore this is definitely a good preventative measure for the long run.
I would definitely say if you are in your 20s or 30s and your skin is in pretty good shape, this is great for prevention. If you are in your late 30s or 40s, this would probably slow down the effects of gravity. But as always, prevention is always better than cure.
If you are in the position to consider purchasing this device, please be mindful of the expectation of what this can achieve and make sure you are able to commit to using this on a regular basis, long term. You probably won’t see results in 2 weeks or even a month if your skin is quite good to start with. A normal jade roller could give you similar depuffing results, but it wouldn’t give you long-term results from the microcurrent for that lifting effect.
I will be using this for another 2 weeks alongside the BEAR mini for a comparison post. I will update you guys on the BEAR on my IG to see what 4 weeks of micro-current does for my skin (@kittiemui). Come follow me and see the device in action!
