Where I got it

This entire set was sent to me to try and review if I loved it (thank you!). If you haven’t noticed, I have not received any PR send-outs for a few years now. I actually haven’t talked about this before, but I seemed to have fallen out of all of the lists of all PR companies in New Zealand a few years ago. Maybe my demographics or views or following isn’t large enough or isn’t up to their clients’ requirements. To be honest, I did miss the PR, not only for their products but first-hand information and insider’s knowledge of products and new releases.

Currently, I just buy what I want to try and really give them all a good go instead of wasting a PR send-out of something that I most likely won’t use. If this is your first time reading my skincare reviews, I do want to point out that these are all my personal experience and by no means what works for me would work for you as well. I have combination-oily skin with hormonal breakouts (thank goodness it is much under control now!). I love a good science-backed product line as well as green/clean beauty products that have a nice gentle fragrance (my skin isn’t sensitive to fragrance). I love a good sensorial experience from scent to texture and I appreciate each brand’s own ethos and passion towards their philosophy.

Anyway, this post is going to be pretty long, but most of it is the brand’s own product info and ingredients list (see below). Ok, let’s get into it! The Avo Tree skincare products are available from www.theavotree.co.nz. Prices are between $29.99 – $49.99.

What I got

This is the entire set of The Avo Tree Skincare. They have a Cream Cleanser (100ml), a Facial Exfoliant (100ml), an Eye Cream (15ml), a Face Oil (30ml), a Day Cream (50g), and a Night Cream (50g). The Avo Tree has combined the goodness of avocados with nature’s finest ingredients to create pure, nourishing products for naturally healthy skin. Each and every product harnesses the power of cold-pressed extra virgin avocado oil – sourced from our produce and specifically formulated into 6 wonderful products.  

Cream Cleanser (100ml). Rich in nourishing nutrients and skin-strengthening vitamins, this gentle everyday cleanser sweeps away makeup and impurities without stripping the skin of its natural hydrators. Infused with moisture-balancing avocado oil and the blemish-fighting properties of Manuka honey, this purifying formula also boosts radiance thanks to the free-radical-fighting actives in elderberries. So skin feels clean and soft with a glow that lasts all day.

Loaded with vitamins A, C, E & K from avocado and carrot seed oil, this replenishing night cream boosts collagen and enhances your skin’s renewal process to help promote youthfulness. How I find it

Before I begin, I would like to thank The Avo Tree for sending me these to try. I did have a brief look at the products before I said yes for the PR send out because I wanted to know if they would suit my skin type particularly. I didn’t want to try anything that doesn’t even suit my skin type to start with and potentially not liking the product line because my skin dislikes a particularly common ingredient to start with.

Anyway, I think The Avo Tree has done a good job with the basic skincare product line-up, the only thing missing would be a sunscreen, but we all know sunscreens are not easily formulated and needs to go through a large amount of tests, etc. Therefore, if you want to use the entire set, you need to bring in your own sunscreen.

The Cream Cleanser is really cushiony and creamy, just like rubbing crushed avocado on my face (without that oiliness feeling of course). This works great as a morning cleanser or a second cleanse after you remove all your makeup. It doesn’t leave my skin feeling tight or dry. The Facial Exfoliant was something I was a little sceptical about in the first place because it has ground avocado seeds. We all know that ground or crushed apricot seeds are abrasive (think St. Ives Apricot Scrub), but the crushed seed in this creamy-based exfoliant is really soft and rounded. It felt like rubbing crushed oatmeal on my face! I was pleasantly surprised and I loved that sensorial experience so much! Rinsing it off makes my skin feel soft and smooth without that dry, tight feeling.

After cleansing and exfoliating (2 a week), I will use the Eye Cream. I seldom use a separate eye cream because I am lazy and I apply all my lightweight serums and moisturisers over the eye area anyway. This eye cream has all the seed oils and fatty alcohol to moisturise the eye area. It also has bee venom to stimulate collagen production.

Then I reach for either the Day Cream or the Night Cream. Both creams look and feel very similar, they even smell the same. I would say you can go with either one, you probably don’t need to buy both. The Day Cream does not have SPF and the Night Cream is not super thick.

I usually use a facial oil under my moisturiser because most of the time my oils contain actives like Vitamin C or Retinol so I don’t want my actives to have to work through moisturisers to penetrate my skin. But for a moisturising oil like this one, the instructions from the brand is to apply the Face Oil over the moisturiser. This oil is so far, my favourite product from the range because it feels really luxurious and rich, but not thick at all. It has this beautiful golden hue, like rosehip oil, but without that nutty smell (which I don’t mind anyway). It feels lighter than rosehip oil, but very elegant texture on the skin. I would use this either on its own in the AM – just 2-3 drops, or in the PM over the Night Cream – 2-3 drops as well.

Overall

The entire skincare set is overall very nourishing and minimal frills. Not saying it’s basic, but it is not a brand high on fancy packaging, sensorial experience or multiple steps. It focuses on gentle, yet effective skincare, predominantly using avocado oil and coconut derived fatty alcohol. They do formulate with fragrance but it is very mild. If you do want to try just one item, I would highly recommend getting the Face Oil. It contains all the goodness of avocado oils, and a number of seed oils without any added fragrance (smells naturally from Rosehip seed).

I would say this suits people with normal to dry skin and combination dry skin as well. If you have combination-oily skin, you would enjoy the Cream Cleanser and the Facial Exfoliator. I would incorporate the oil as well maybe once or twice a week instead of a moisturiser.
