Where I got it
I have been on a roll with trying out viral makeup products, especially lip products. Lately, the hype is around lip tints and glossy lip balms/glosses. We have all sorts of brands coming up with their versions. From Korean brands, Japanese brands, Western brands as well as Chinese brands. I hardly venture into Chinese makeup brands, simply because I do not have a lot of confidence in them, also I am not often exposed to Chinese products. JudyDoll is #cbeauty and their social media posts and photos look so beautiful. However, the skeptic in me is suspicious of how “real” the photos are, and how “edited” the videos are. So I got to try them out myself.
I ordered these directly from the JudyDoll website which ships out from Hong Kong/China (as shown on the parcel), and even though I had to pay USD $9.99 for shipping, the website automatically applied 2 discount codes for me and I bought these at a discount. I will show you my order summary here. As you can see below, they were also doing a BOGO (buy one get one) offer so I got one lip gloss for free as well as a free eyelash curler.
The lip glosses were usually $11.99 and the mascara is usually $9.99 which are very reasonable prices. It took just under 2 weeks to arrive in New Zealand and things were packaged neatly and safely in bubble wrap and a box.
I was unable to find English version of the ingredients list, I simply copied the Chinese text from the product packaging.

How I find it
Immediately I tried out the Watery Lip Gloss and they are very nice. Now there are plenty of watery-effect lip glosses with a stain out there, but what gives this a special punch is the metal applicator. I also came across this video on their IG account demonstrating how the lip gloss creates a film after the first application and then a second layer would lock in the watery shine and would not transfer when drinking. I highly doubt that would be the case, but I still want to try!
From the tube, both shades look similar and at one point I pulled both of them out for photos and I couldn’t tell which one goes back into which tube. However, once applied to the skin/lips, shade 10 is a deeper, brighter red. Whereas shade 11 is more of a mauve pink. You can see below.
The applicator is so innovative and I love it because all the product goes onto my lips. I would use the curved side (left image) to apply the product, and then use the other side (middle image) for the extra product and to blend everything in. I do not need to dip in the tube again for the first application. After about 2-3 minutes, I would apply another layer for that extra shine and colour.
The gloss is not sticky at all and feels very nice on the lips. There are no particular fragrances as well. Once the lip gloss has formed its layer on the lips, the gloss stays on for a good 1-2 hours if you don’t drink and eat. The stain stays on for hours, but if you want that glossy look, you would have to reapply.
Shades 10 and 11 look very similar on the wand before application, but once it is on the skin/lips, I can obviously see the shade difference. Shade 10 is a brighter, deeper red whilst shade 11 is more of a mauve-y pink. The colour also changes slightly as it settles down and looks more sheer and juicy than just applied – see below.
While I was on their website, I also saw that they have other lip tints with the regular applicator and the tube is just not as interesting and pretty as the Watery Lip Gloss. However, since I have a buy 2 get 1 free offer, I wanted to try something else from the brand as well. The Iced Tea really got to me because I love iced tea. The formula is basically the same on the lips and stains the same as well. The only difference is the applicator.
The Iced Tea Watery Lip gloss also changes colour slightly after application. Shade #C02 turns out to be quite a nice coral pink on the lips. This lip gloss also changes colour slightly after application and turns slightly brownish. On the lips, the transformed shade still looks quite good and nothing weird, but when I swatched it on the back of my hand and wiped it off after 5 minutes, the stain that it leaves looked yellowish brown with no hint of pinky tones. I thought that was a little weird.
Lastly, this is also one of their popular products – the Iron Mascara. This has the interested threaded applicator which is not a first. I remember that Hourglass did one a while ago and it was quite expensive. The formula of this mascara is actually quite interesting because it looks like a liquid, instead of a normal mascara with some sort of thickness. In saying that, this mascara is not a volumizing formula, but it does separate lashes, keeps the curls and adds subtle volume and length.
I enjoy this on my sparse lashes and usually my lashes would drop if the mascara is heavy and weight my lashes down. This formula builds up my lashes without clumping. However, I did see a bit of melting to the under-eye area during the day, but all I needed was to use my favourite mascara base under this to prevent that from happening.
When it comes to removal, this is easy to remove with eye and lip makeup remover, or just cleansing oil over the entire face. There are no clumps of mascara to remove and usually, my cotton pad looks really clean (with a few fibres) and it looks like I hardly have any product on my lashes.
Overall
I have to admit I have a preconceived opinion about Chinese branded makeup products may not be tested for safety and ingredients may be questionable. However, there are more and more China-based makeup brands popping up lately, and people are trying them out so I guess we will see in due course. But since I am not a professional and I really don’t understand the quality control standards and laws in China, I don’t think I will be trying more from JudyDoll in the mean time. Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoyed the lip glosses and mascara. The texture, the finish, the packaging, everything turned out fine for me, but I don’t feel safe to just jump on every viral product from a random company that I have not heard of. At the end of the day, I put these products in my mouth and right up close to my eyes so I would rather be safe than sorry.
I’m sorry if this comes across as ignorant or racist, but this is just my personal opinion. Hope I have not offended you in any way.
